I was watching this YC video (https://youtu.be/IRROi-Q1V44?t=1050). They mention that one of the mistakes early startups make is spending money on ads. So my question is, at what point in a startup can you actually spend money on ads?

Before marketing (not ad) spend, meet with at least XX number of real decision makers.
Ask their reaction to your offer. Bring marketing people to observe and business/tech people for a short presntation and to answer questions.
You're going to be asking prospects for 15 minutes of time.
