It seems everyone and their mother has a mentor or is trying to find one, but I've never seen any such mentoring occurring in my circles (I don't count official mentoring, such as intern supervision). Also what would be the benefit for the mentor? let say someone is very senior in their field, are they expected to use their free time to help someone without anything in return or is that a paid service?
Curious about your experience.
It is better to ask concrete advice from a relevant person when you need it.
I would also say that unless you really want to be like a particular person, it is better to make ones own decisions and mistakes.
If you are actually senior, you aren't really gonna be thinking that way because mentoring will be part of your professional practice.
But also, a lot of organizations don't have that view of professionalism, so a lot of careers never see much mentoring going on.
Finally, a lot of young people don't behave in ways that invite mentoring. They are unlikely to receive it then and unlikely to "pass it on" later. Good luck.
