Entrepreneurs, how did you start in an industry you knew nothing about?
I'm curious to hear from entrepreneurs who have successfully entered industries they initially knew nothing about but for some reason they saw some potential there. What were the first steps you took to get started? Is it possible to get in a field you are unfamiliar with?
You're asking entrepreneurs, not say, engineers, so the knowledge hurdle can be quite low. For example, sales people often don't care what the product or service being sold is if they think they can sell a lot. "I can sell refrigerators to Eskimos" is the type of seller that can plug into many industries. Ray Kroc knew nothing about selling hamburgers but once he was exposed to the McDonald brothers he immediately saw the potential. There are a million such stories.
Volunteer, offer to work for free, study on your own.
The single, absolutely essential ingredient is motivation. If you don't have this, if you're content witb others controlling you and setting your agenda, you're probably destined to be a wage slave.
Starting with several 10s of billions of dollars burning a hole in your pocket is one way. But maybe you wanted successful examples!
