What made you better at your job?

My current job (related to providing clean water) aligns with my values. In the past when a job hasn't, I don't care to get better at it and it's only the money that makes it worthwhile until I eventually find a better fit (including teaching at a high school with fewer than 60 students where us few teachers had enough autonomy).
