How to use multiple monitors using Gnome?

I quite like the Gnome desktop as my daily driver. However, compared to tiling window managers like i3, I miss the support for multiple monitors the most. The secondary display seems suitable for only watching a movie while working and it is difficult to switch apps, workspaces don't work, neither do we a bar with the date-time or applications.

Do you know some extensions and tools to make this better?
