What marks the turning point for China's public perception in the West?

It's undeniable that public perception of China has shifted in the last decade, but I do not remember when or how that happened. Who and what influenced it?

If you look at opinion polls, there was no single shared turning point across countries: https://www.pewresearch.org/global/2020/10/06/unfavorable-vi...

Opinions got extremely negative from 2019 to 2020 most likely because of the pandemic, but if you look at longer time spans, the curves for each country are very different, and some had very negative views long before the pandemic.

Probably the bad combination of Xi and the coming of age for Chinese power.
