How to Discuss Promotion/Payrise?

I came across to this post talking about salary negotiation while taking offers: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=24588379I found the blog post and the discussion enlightening for the offer phase.I think another difficulty for us engineers is to talk about promotion and pay rises. Do you know any resources discussing how to approach to those discussions? Do you have any tips/insight for those who are reasonably happy with their job but think they could do with career progression or increase in pay more than 1-3%?
