What are some tips for a former QA now starting as a Business Analyst?


Hello HN, I am a web application QA engineer of several years, recently promoted to a business analyst role. We are a mid-size, 10+ years old company.

I will be joining a team of two senior analysts next month. Do you have any tips or sources for me? Are there some pitfalls I should know about, stuff I should learn?

I found BA role to be quite enjoyable. You get to define what the team implements and get to interact with business more. As such you get to learn the business whatever that may be. Make sure you have a good process. Do you use use cases? How do you capture business rules? Do technical rules differ from business rules ie do you differentiate between them? Without knowing much about your organization I’ll state again make sure you have a good process and everyone follows it. Oh and don’t be a pushover. The PMs or product manager or customers will always try to change scope on you. Always require a change ticket to control that.
